Hamas, the military wing of the Palestine resistance movement, has condemned Israel over the recent attacks against Palestinian residents that are located in East Jersualum. The Hamas brigade commander, Mohammed Deif, is calling for the aggression against their people in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood to stop immediately or there will be a “heavy price”. The Sheikh neighborhood was raided by Israeli forces this Tuesday. It became extremely contentious as residents and protestors were sprayed with skunk water, chemically enhanced sewer water, and physically assaulted.
Mustafa Barghouti, the head of the Palestinian National Initiative party, is calling this a conflict of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian population of Jersaualm. Barghouti says this is a matter of systemic issues of racism. Still, this is a multifaceted conflict. In terms of a conflict of interest, it is not only ethnic due to the ethnic cleansing. It is also a conflict that arose as a conflict of religion. The Gaza Strip territory interests both Israel and Palestine is considered holy territory for Palestine Arabs and Israeli Jews. They are going to have a deep interest in this territory and be willing to die over it because it is such a fundamental religious territory for both groups. That is a large reason that this is a conflict that needs to be monitored as it has the potential to continuously spiral if both groups refuse to compromise. It is even more difficult to get countries or people to compromise when it comes to religion.
Interestingly, one of the proposed solutions is a “one-state solution”. This refers to the idea that a unitary, federal or confederate Israeli-Palestinian state should be created. It would encompass all of the territory of Israel, possibly the Gaza Strip, and possibly Golan Heights. A realist may say this is going to be a difficult sell as land is power and this would require the two states giving up some power and working together. A liberal theorist may hope that reciprocity pans out for the two countries. It will be interesting to see this pan out in the future.
