Sudan is facing protests by civilians who are pro-democracy. Protests are taking place in Sudan’s capital Khartoum and its twin city Omdurman against the military take over that took place October 25, which was led by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Ralliers are also requesting the release of political figures as well as pro-democracy activists who were arrested due to being part of the “opposition groups”. Protestors were sprayed with tear gas by Sudanese security forces during some of the rallies. It was recently reported that an unidentified male was shot and killed by the security forces while protesting at the capital. This marks at least the 80th civilian death since the coup took place.

I think that what is going on in Sudan is really sad. Within African nations alone there have been 7 coups or coup attempts in the countries of Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Mali, and Sudan.  In these cases, the military takeovers succeed; in Niger and Guinea-Bissau they failed. The UN has gotten involved in some of these coups in order to try and restore the peace. These are sad situations to be in especially for the civilians. It is hearing of acts of violence like this that remind me how lucky we are to live in a country where overall we do not feel afraid of losing our right to democracy very easily. Hopefully the situation at hand in Sudan will come to an end soon so that no more civilians have to die.

This relates back to class because of the involvement of the UN. Although the UN is not directly involved yet in the coup’s in Sudan, they have taken a stance in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad. The United Nations is the closest thing there is to a world government. The goal of the UN is to maintain international peace and security. The UN more than likely got involved due to the fact that the increased number of coups happening across Africa could prove to be an international threat. If the coups keep on happening the violence in the nations could increase, like what is being witnessed in Sudan. The UN more than likely wants to try and prevent the spread of coups internationally in order to prevent violence from increasing.
