Israel attacks “safe (Mawasi, the Israel designated “safe bombed) zone”

On Tuesday, September 10th, Israel dropped at least three missiles on the Israel-designated “safe zone” al-Mawasi on the Gaza strip, killing at least 19 people and wounding about 65 more. The area of al-Mawasi is packed full of displaced people, namely Palestinians, due to the Israel-Hamas conflict that began in early October, 2023. The area that was bombed was filled with more than 60 tents, and at least 20 were engulfed in flames. This is not the first time that Israel has bombarded this part of the Gaza Strip, and the conditions in the area are already desperate. According to Al Jazeera, aid agencies are reporting that the people living in al-Mawasi do not have “proper access to food, water, and essential services like sanitation and healthcare,” and “aid delivery is limited due to access and security issues”. Additionally, the camp is severely overcrowded.

Israel claims that in bombing al-Mawasi they “struck significant Hamas terrorists who were operating within a command and control centre embedded inside the humanitarian area in Khan Younis”, also claiming that terrorist organizations, such as Hamas, are damaging the humanitarian infrastructure in order to carry out acts of violence. However, Hamas has denied these claims several times, calling the bombing a “heinous massacre”. While obviously this will increase feelings of antagonism between the Palestinians and Israeli, it will result in a rise of Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, already considered “host countries” for Palestinian refugees, and rise in disease. With continued bombing of “safe zones”, Palestinians who can travel will likely flee to the surrounding countries listed previously searching for refuge, however, because of the recent closing of the King Hussein Bridge/West Bank crossing between Israel and Jordan, Syria and Lebanon will become the countries most utilized. Additionally, I think countries with a close proximity to European states will also be flooded with refugees. For example, Tunisia, due to its proximity to Italy.

The conflict between the Israeli and the Palestinians represents the need for powerful allies, with powerful economies, during a time of war and violence. Though Palestine has nine countries, including China and Russia, providing support and aid, it is not recognized by the US and therefore continues to be a stateless nation. This solidifies the powerful influence nationalism has within a recognized state. Though some Israelis may disagree with their countries actions there has not been any super effective civil resistance, as now Israel citizens have a common enemy.
