On Tuesday, September 17th, Hezbollah promised retaliation against Israel for a series of detonations of pagers. To avoid Israeli locational detection, the pagers were utilized by Hezbollah fighters due to their low-tech means. Notably, the pagers were detonated in southern Beirut (Dahiyeh) and the eastern Bekaa valley, which were all Hezbollah strongholds. Israel has made no comment, but earlier that day Israel's domestic security agency stated it had plotted an attack against Hezbollah to assassinate a former senior defense official. Amongst the explosion, 2,750 people were wounded, 200 of which are in critical conditions. Additionally, the attack claimed the lives of 8 people.
Although Israel has yet to make a statement, it is all but too coincidental giving their earlier statement for Israel to not have been involved. With that being said, Hezbollah and Israel have continued border clashes. Hasbullah made a statement that they wish to end these conflicts, but only if the war in Gaza ends. Ceasefire attempts have been in a deadlock, thus, Hezbollah's statement of promised retaliation is just a matter of time. Hezbollah is a Lebanese terrorist group (recognised as such via the United States), of which are Sunnis. Therefore, they ally heavily with Palestinians who are also in fact Sunni. To me, this war seems to have no end in sight.
Israel and Hezbollah's responses to this event are critical. The Israel-gaza war has been dragging on, and this attack only strengthens Hezbollah's will to overtake Israel. Furthermore, this puts Israel back in the hot seat at the UN, which is already displeased with Israel. Situational speaking, Israel has taken the stance of defending their state. However, this attack represents offensive measures, furthering the hole they dig for themselves with the UN. Israel would be better off promoting peace, as this could simmer Hezbollah and Hamas aggression, ultimately reaching ceasefire.
Israel faced attacks from Hamas which started this war. Palestine is a non-recognized state, due to its recognition by many, its own government and seeking of recognition, but fails to achieve UN status due to the United States. Hamas is also recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States. Hamas in Gaza, and Hezbollah in Lebanon are political parties.
