Israeli-Palestinian conflict-How much more can the people take?

Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to a widespread Israeli military operations in Gaza. Efforts to rescue hostages have been largely unsuccessful, and almost two million Gazans have fled their homes. The death toll in Gaza, reported by the Hamas-run health ministry, stands at around 40,00, though numbers are difficult to verify. The conflict has also escalated regional tensions, with Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthi rebels and other Iran-backed groups attacking Israel and U.S. positions in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. is working to mediate a ceasefire, but no resolution has been reached.

This conflict between Israel and Palestine is significant due to its deep historical roots, geopolitical implications, and the involvement of numerous international actors. it dates back to the last 19th and early 20th century, when both Jewish and Arab nationalist movements began vying for control over the land that now consists of Israel and the Palestine territories. The conflict intensifies with the creation of Israel in 1948, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, and has been since marked by several wars and ongoing tensions. Israel has had a long lasting issue with the establishment of Palestine on the west bank, since Israel has previously faced wars and violent attacks from neighboring states and militant groups and the west bank is essential for their defense. The Israeli people have seen the land as historically Jewish and a part of their ancestral homeland, as described in Biblical texts. The complex mix of factors makes the conflict difficult to resolve.

The state of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by most of the UN, but the United States does not. The United States has been allies with Israel since 1949 and has consistently been their most reliable partner in the Middle East. Although the best way to resolve the conflict is foreign intervention, it is hard for the US to step in alongside Israel because of the mass genocide happening in Gaza caused by the Israeli military. While Palestine has a small, weakened government, their allies stand against Israel and the United States with strong militia and further intervention could cause repercussions for our ally, Israel, in terms of their relations with the countries surrounding them. Decades of failed peace efforts have left this conflict unresolved with neither a two-state or one-state solution.
