Somalia’s al-Shabab armed group attacks hotel in Mogadishuhttps://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/31/somalias-al-shabab-rebels-attack-hotel-in-the-capital-city

The Al-Shabab clan launched an attack on a local hotel in the Somalian capital, Mogadishu. Sources say that at least 3 people were killed. Senior official in the national security agency Mohamed Dahir says that 3 people was a lucky death count and that many more could have been killed. 6 others were injured. A vehicle loaded with explosives crashed into the entrance gate of the hotel, following that gunman entered the hotel and opened fire on on the patrons and workers inside. The attack, was as a threat to the currently established government that was backed internationally. This is not the first case of an attack like this, where the clan have used the exact same tactics to attack gate protected innocent before.

This attack is a horrible event. I can not even begin to understand what the innocent people in Somalia have to live through every day because all of the major world governments refuse to become involved. Due to the precedent set by operation restore hope, no countries capable of properly intervening want to get involved. I cannot even begin to fathom what it is like to have bombing attacks at the local hotel everyday. Imagine walking to work, and then a van full of gunman casually drive by you, multiple times a week. It is just horrible, there has to be something that people can do to make a significant difference without too much cost.

Somalia has geo-political importance. This is due to it’s location on the horn of Africa and location in close proximity to the Indian ocean which has extremely active oil and natural gas trade routes. I think that there are some countries backing the Somalian government not only to help out the innocents dying, but also to possibly have a claim to gain some portion of land from Somalia in the case that the county eventually stabilizes. Eventually, I hope that the country will stabilize.
