Analysis Post— General Bajwa: Pakistan’s new most influential man has two big tasks

I find it interesting that in Pakistan the army chief is more influential than the Prime Minister. I think it is especially crucial that Raheel Sharif was able to execute a peaceful transfer of power because Pakistan has lots of pressing issues, for example the dispute with India over Kashmir. I also think Bajwa is a wise choice because he is experienced, especially because he served in Kashmir. I think he has a lot of pressure to live up to the popularity of Sharif. Sharif was applauded by the media but if Bajwa fails to deliver then the media could easily turn into a problem instead of an asset. It is imperative that Bajwa continues the successful counterterrorism policies of Sharif in order to maintain progress. If Bajwa is able to share power with the civilian government, it may enable him to focus more resources on Kashmir and the extremists This is important because relationships with India and Afghanistan are poor. It will also enable him to gain public support because there will be greater economic stability. This is important because he will have a larger margin for error and will be more willing to take action. I hope new leadership will reinvigorate negotiations with India and the Afghan Taliban.
