Analysis Post – Myanmar Crisis

At this point in time, Suu Kyi has made a statement about the Rohingya crisis that, although vague, has improved her standing in the world because she has at least acknowledged the crisis, even though she has claimed that they don’t know the root cause of the attacks. The root cause is clearly the religious and cultural tensions between the Buddhist majority in Myanmar and the Muslim population there. However, I do wonder what the immediate or surface cause was. I wonder why the attackers chose now to inflict disaster on that region. Did something happen, or is this just the chosen date of a premeditated attack?

I think that the large migration of refugees fleeing to Bangladesh could create some conflict there if there continue to be more refugees who need aid. Depending on the longevity of the crisis, it could put strain on the Bangladesh government and create hostility toward the refugees by the population of Bangladesh. In the world right now, nationalism and fear of immigrants is growing and it could possibly spread to Bangladesh. However, as the country is quite poor, this influx of refugees could provide the country with funding from other countries and organizations that would not only help the refugees but would also get more money circulating in their economy. The Myanmar refugees could create any number of reactions from the people of Bangladesh, however, I think that these are the two most likely.
