About a year ago, a Ukrainian flight was shot down by “two surface-to-air missiles” by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The flight had ties to Canada and killed everyone on board, 176 people. This year, Canada has taken the incident to court and has ruled this as an act of terrorism from the Islamic Republic towards Canada. The Iran has condemned this, as they feel this was an unfair accusation, as they feel this was “predictable considering the country’s history of making moves against the Islamic republic. In the report released by Iran earlier this year, it was stated that this accident was caused by human error and was not intentional; however, they had fired multiple missiles that same day.
There appears to be already some dislike or divide between Iran and Canada- as Iran feels Canada has treated Iran unfairly in the past by blaming them for things that they did not do. Canada has officially announced this as an act of terrorism- meaning they can now choose to react to this as they would if it were a terrorist attack. This brings to the table more divide and potential conflict between the two countries. Iran has insulted the Canadian government and courts from this decision- creating high tensions between the two. In the midst of the conflict the world is facing right now, it could be extensively dangerous for Canada and Iran to be fighting.
As previously stated, the world is currently facing extreme crisis and conflict, in many different places. By Canada’s ruling of this being an act of terrorism, is opens the door for there to be continued conflict between these two, allies, and neighboring countries. It is important for NATO to keep an eye on this, with the hopes that this does not become a bigger conflict then what it currently is. If this was truly an accident, Iran should come up with a better system to monitoring their skies and their missiles, or any other weapons so this does not happen again.
