With the war between Ukraine and Russia raging on India seems to be tagging on to Russia, at least when it comes to trade. The Russian Foreign minister is set to visit India this week, in relation to trade between the two countries. This is the first time Russia has visited another country since the beginning of the war. Deals seem to have been made between the two countries, Russia selling hundreds of thousands of tonnes of multiple products with India. Some of those products being 45,000 tonnes of sunflower oil and 16 million barrels of crude oil which is a 115% increase in sales since last year. India says it would be stupid to not take advantage of the extreme discount of products that Russia is selling at.
It is surprising that the rest of the world that opposes Russia has turned a side eye to the trades that are taking place. It seems to be the only trade that Russia has been able to complete since the beginning of the war and could potentially make the United States sanctions futile. While it will most likely not revitalize Russia’s economy fully it will definitely give Russia an economic boost that will allow them to continue the fight against Ukraine. If the United States was to make a response to this by publicly outing India for the trade between Russia, India might get scared to lose allies and back out of the trade.
This relates to class because it shows how countries interacting with each other through trade could potentially make the relationship of another country worse. In this case it would be all the countries that are supporting Ukraine in this war. It also relates to class because it shows how a country reacts when in serious economic turmoil. In this case it would be Russia discounting their prices in order to sell to India.
