The Ministry of Defense from Tashkent, Uzbekistan has denied all Russian claims that it violated Afghanistan’s airspace. The denial follows a report by Russia’s Sputnik news agency which claimed that drones that had been spotted flying over Mazar-i-Sharif were Uzbek-manufactured. These drones looked very similar to Uzbekistan’s Lochin drones; however, the video captured was shot from a distance and could not reveal any markings from the angle it was taken at. The same drones also bore a resemblance to Turkish-made Bayraktar unmanned aerial vehicles. “The unmanned, fighter and attack aircraft of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Uzbekistan are on standby combat duty in the strictly established manner,” the ministry stated.
In my opinion, this article is important because it mentions the takeover by the Taliban as well as the new usage of drones by the Uzbeki government. These Lochin drones have military applications covering surveillance and artillery fire control. They are also said to have civilian applications as well. However, the government insists that they are not being used to fly over Afghanistan. Also, the government has stated in a separate speech that they have no intention of giving in to Taliban demands to return Afghanistan aircraft. Pilots from Afghanistan’s air force flew 46 aircraft to Uzbekistan and 18 to Tajikistan as the Taliban seized power last August. They included Mi-17 and UH-60 helicopters and PC-12, C-208, AC-208, and A-29 fixed-wing aircraft, the VOA reported.
This relates to class because it discusses a minor conflict between Uzbekistan, Russia, and Afghanistan. It also discusses technological advancements made in Uzbekistan. Lastly, it discusses the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan as well. Those three topics combined all make for a really good article to read and report on. In class, we have discussed the Taliban and other terrorist groups as well as their takeovers, so seeing a real example of things that happen with them is interesting to read since it isn’t always reported in American news. Together, this article related to class very well and was a good, interesting read.
