The Russian government has been in contact with the Taliban government, and trying to support the newly founded leadership. Russia recently hosted Taliban officials to discuss regional threats and how Russia can continue to support them. Russia has been helping the Taliban independently and through the UN Food Agency. Russia has also stated that it is the responsibility of Western states to “bear the responsibility of rebuilding [Afghanistan]” Meanwhile, the Taliban is still trying to receive international recognition as a sustainable government. Other countries have been trying to get their hands on Afghanistan and take control of the situation, but a Taliban representative has said that countries should stop telling them what to do. However, they believe their relationship with Russia can help stabilize the government.

One of a new country’s priorities is to create alliances with other countries. They are very vulnerable when they are first formed, and building alliances can help strengthen your country. That is what the Taliban is trying to do. A lot of countries have not supported the Taliban and want nothing to do with them, but the Taliban has maintained a relationship with Russia and it will benefit their country tremendously. Not only will it make them stronger, but it gives them access to a lot of Russia’s resources and intelligence. Russia is also trying to rebuild Afghanistan after 20 years of war. Having a world superpower supporting you and providing resources is a huge advantage for Afghanistan.

This relates to class because it deals with the political economy pillar of international relations. The Taliban is focusing on rebuilding Afghanistan and developing a strong government. However, that is very hard to accomplish by themselves because they lack specific resources and skills to develop a sustainable government. Building an alliance will benefit both countries and is a huge part of international relations. Without alliances, countries would be left on their own and would not have support from their fellow countries. Gaining help from Russia will be one step closer to achieving a strong economy and maybe international recognition.
