The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death on November 17 2025. She was convicted of crimes against humanity. The charges stem from the violent suppression of student protest in 2024 which resulted in significant casualties leading to her resignations and, further, her exile. She had been forced out of power by student protests and her government collapsed. She faced five charges of inciting murder including ordering demonstrators to be hanged, ordering the use of lethal weapons, drones and helicopters. Hasina was tried but denied all the charges and called her sentence a politically motivated attack.

The ICT (International Crimes Tribunal)’s verdict of Hasina intensifies the polarization in Bangladesh. Hasina transformed from a controversial leader into a symbol of tyranny and persecution. This strains diplomatic relations with India as India granted Hasina asylum and is unlikely to remove her as they view the charges as political. This creates tension between Bangladesh’s government and India and influences future cooperation with Bandgalshi administrations. This could spill across borders and could create a humanitarian crisis or heighten security challenges at the neighboring countries border including Myanmar and India.

For Hasina and her party, they view the death sentence as a biased and politically motivated conviction that was designed to eliminate her from her positions and dismantle her party. She and her party denied all charges of inciting murder. They emphasized that judicial fairness had been violated through her absentia trial which prevented her from mounting a full defense.

The Bangladesh government views the conviction as a crucial step in ensuring accountability fro the brutal 2024 crackdown on student protest and would hold someone accountable for the hundreds of deaths that occurred.

This addresses national sovereignty as it shows how personal accountability and accusation on political figures threatens the sovereignty of the country as a whole. Especially when convicted by International councils. This case also was entangled with India and reflects cross border struggle on issues that  at first seem internal but become a broader problem when including issues such as the right to asylum.
