The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday at the BRICS summit in Russia. This annual meeting includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. BRICS was created to challenge the dominance of Western countries in the world, especially the United States. The two countries militaries have been in small conflicts along their border as clashes have been inevitable. The two countries attained a deal over the Ladakh region of the border ending a four year conflict and military stand-off, this will lead to better political and economical relations as the tension has been eased.

Both India and China are large populous countries within the world, and as they share a border, they must have strong relations with each other to prevent conflicts. However, conflicts have been occurring along the border in petty clashes between the local border guard and militaries. Both political leaders have needed to step in to prevent the escalation of the conflicts so that they do not ruin or weaken political and economical ties between the countries. Modi and Xi meeting together outside of the BRICS summit to address this issue is a step in the right direction towards stability within the Ladakh region. Obviously both border guards and militaries are eager to flex their muscles and show dominance over the other, so small clashes on the borders are inevitable. However, a large government hand in the matter should stop the clashes and prevent any escalation.

Both India and China do not want these small regional conflicts to escalate and risk the relations between the two countries. The two political leaders of the area are looking for the easiest way to soothe the tension over the Ladakh region of the border. Pursuing this meeting between Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi is crucial for the containment and elimination for the conflicts. Both leaders don’t want a larger conflict to arise and are interested in quick and efficient talks to reduce military presence and improve political and economic ties. A deal on Monday of this week has occurred to end the four year military stand-off.

As of now, the world is a uni-polar system with one dominant country, the United States. However, the BRICS summit attempts to promote economic cooperation and challenge the dominance of the United States in the world order. This small conflict between two countries within BRICS can be easily dealt with, however, if gone unchecked, may destroy the relations between the two. If India and China want to challenge American dominance, they must team together to present a unified and stronger front economically and politically within the world.
