The Oxfam scandal is, to say the least, a disgrace and a disappointment. Oxfam’s website lists their vision as, “…a just world without poverty. We want a world where people are valued and treated equally, enjoy their rights as full citizens, and can influence decisions affecting their lives.” The workers involved in this scandal in South Sudan have neglected every piece of that vision. A person being valued and treated equally does not equate to being sexually harassed in exchange for aid. There should be no price, monetarily or other, for this aid as that is the whole purpose behind this government funded organization. This comes right in time with other public out speak about sexual harassment such as the Me Too movement. Victims are becoming less afraid to speak out. People’s voices are being heard more than ever, especially when notorious organizations are being called into question. The article points out the public outrage in Britain, which is 100% understandable as I am angered as well. With that said, however, I do not think that Britain should be reducing its funds towards foreign aid. South Sudan and other countries being served by Oxfam need the aid too much. Perhaps a more thorough and intense selection process to ensure the intentions of Oxfam members are pure, but the aid is still needed.
