The president of Uganda has created this new sort of task force to help crime. Crime rates have been out of control in the city of Kampala. The people have murdered High profiles such as State prosecutor Joan Kagezi, Former police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi, Politician Ibrahim Abiriga ,and Police officer Mohammad Kirumira, who was outspoken about corruption in the police force. Other crime involves smash and grabs during traffic stops. The LDU’s will be equipped with four months of training, a weapon, and will be sent out into the streets to basically be the police’s ears and eyes. Since the military of Uganda is keeping peace in other countries they don’t have time to resolve the crime in it’s home cities.
They are basically the National Guard but with a lot less training and just used for the police’s benefit. A couple problems with this new idea is, part of the Uganda police is corrupt. Even if these LDU units help the police out will the police even bother to look at it. A lot of these people really need the money so they go in to any extend to get it. So that being a dirty cop or a wrong doing LDU unit they will do what they have to put food on their families tables.
The government has promised every LDU unit $50 a month. These people cannot only live on that my thinking is that they will take the governments money and also play along with the gangs to make the most money.
Ten years ago that’s what happened when Uganda released something similar to stop crime rates. The militia ended up hurting the government than helping it.
I think if Uganda wants to make it’s cities cleaner and crime free. It goes back to economy. It needs to promise the people better economic opportunity so they don’t need to look to crime to receive that extra dollar to help put food on their families tables.
