In Tanzania, there have been many allegations towards Tanzanian authorities that they have greatly abused up to 18 asylum seekers from Burundi. The authorities have kept 11 of them in inhumane living conditions for several weeks and in the process tortured them.  They released 3 of them into Tanzania and forced the other eight back into Burundi where they had been detained without charge. The Tanzanian government is being pressured to launch investigations into their authorities’ crimes and get to the bottom of the inhumane acts happening inside their borders. Between August and November, Human Rights Watch conducted 23 phone interviews with victims and other sources within the camps that have requested to stay confidential who have backed up the victims’ stories.

This is a disgusting, stomach turning act happening in Tanzania. This violates human rights in every way possible and for no reason at all. The intellegance agents and local authorities would hang the Burundians from the ceilings by handcuffs and torture them beyond their brekaing point, just before dealth. They would even tell some of the asylum seekers that they had received information on them from the Burundian government which would suggest the two countries’ agencies are in contact which is extremely unlikely. This all points to the fact that the Tanzanian government needs to punish these authorities and take a step back, look at their requirements to hold a job like that, and change them so this never happens again.

This is a great example of our class discussions on IGOs and their involvement in countries around the world. In this instance, the Burundi asylum seekers have been suffering for months and the Tanzanian government’s lack of involvement is horrible. If that can happen and the Tanzanian government doesn’t do much about it immediately then an IGO should be getting their foot in the door as quickly as possible to stop these inhumane acts. The Human Rights Watch is involved with the cases now, however they have recently sent letters to the people responsible notifying them of their knowledge and the fact they have a case on them. Which is good that someone is doing something, I still don’t think that’s enough, the people from the Human Rights Watch , or any other organization should be in Tanzania doing something about it right now, in person, and getting justice.
