At least 45 people were killed in protests that rocked Kampala and other parts of Uganda last week, a police spokesperson said Monday. The protests were about the arrest of popular music star turned presidential candidate Bobi Wine for contravening Covid-19 regulations at a campaign rally on the last Wednesday in November. The police responded with tear gas when people took to the streets in protests of his arrests. Witnesses told CNN that police, military and plainclothes gunmen fired high caliber rifles in dense urban areas to try and stop the protests before they got too out of hand, but it was too late. There are multiple videos of the police trying to peacefully stop them before they had to start using guns and tear gas. Although not all police are abiding by the rules, Uganda police spokesperson Fred Enanga told CNN that authorities are investigating “a number of incidents” of police officers “allegedly conducting themselves unprofessionally” during the protests. The military has not responded to these allegations though. WIne has been arrested and detained several times since his political career started.

From what I read from a few difficult articles, it seems like the protesters have been nonviolent and peaceful. Of course it could be a different story from the military but it seems that these people are unarmed and trying to stand up for their rights. This is a common problem happening in a lot of places right now with all the different elections going on. It seems that a lot of different countries are not happy with their government right now and no one is doing anything about it. You see so many headlines about protesters getting shot or arrested in the news lately. I think there needs to be changes in government even though this specific case was only based off of the arrest of one person, because there should not be protests happening every weekend in multiple different places.
