Business-Seeking Singer Akon draws political fire in Uganda.

An American Rap artist and signer named Akon recently visited Uganda with the goal of creating a city that would helped boost the economy is Uganda and increase tourism. Akon met with the controversial long time president of Uganda Yoweri Museveni, who has been believed to have rigged previous elections so that he can stay in power. Citizens do not approve of Akons meeting with Museveni and believe that something more sinister is in the works. Most believe that this is simply another ploy by Museveni to try to stay in power longer.

Despite the political problems that may be occurring in Uganda, I think that this is a good thing for one major reason, Covid is slowly receding. There are many states that are returning to normal, like Uganda, and focusing on major national interests again now that Covid is being dealt with. So in general, even though that it is a bad issue, it makes me happy to see “normal” problems returning again.

In class we discus about how individuals can influence a country greatly. This article makes me wonder about the extent of Museveni’s influence over Uganda and how much positive or negative affect he may have on the country. this idea not only applies to Uganda, but every country in the world that has a system that puts multiple individuals in power. The decisions of few, effect the lives of many.
