President Félix Tshisekedi of the DR Congo has declared a state of siege in two different provinces. The Provinces that are under siege are North Kivu (some 1,600km east of Kinshasa) and Ituri (1,800km from Kinshasa). The president has removed all civilians with the DR Congo Military and police forces. Governors and their deputies also have to turn over controle to the security agencies that will also be moving into these State of Siege provinces. The only difference between a state of emergency and a state of siege is that a state of siege has less restrictions then a state of emergency. The president is doing this because in these two provinces there has been armed militants that have been terrorising and massacring the local people. In 2021 alone 300 people have died. This is the first time in DRC’s history that they have used a state of siege.

I think this is a big deal its good for the president to take back control of provinces that are out of control and are killing people. For the regions surrounding those provinces it means that they themselves will become more peaceful because the Militants will be taken out. they would also become more dangerous because depending on how the surrounding nations handle the militants if they get pushed out will stay in their nation now. I think that the event happened because it is so far away from the capitol that people can do whatever they want and don’t have to answer to anyone. it could also be that if the DRC’s military is so small that if they cover everywhere they will be pred out to then to do anything effectively.

this connects to international relation on an individual level. since one person, the president, started and declared the state of siege his actions could effect 1,000 in a positive or negative way depending on what happens in the future with this situation.
