In the Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of Ugandan soldiers were deployed on Wednesday, December 1st. The reasoning behind this operation is to secure bases being used by the Islamic affiliated Allied Democratic Forces, or ADF for short. Currently, the military has already launched air and artillery strikes against certain ADF targets. Also, armored cars and tanks have been in use to infiltrate these bases. According to Ugandan armed forces, these raids have been successful in hitting their targets, with ground operations to follow up. A Congolese military spokesperson has stated that search and control operations will be underway soon. The Congo has promised that the situation will be explained to civilians and all information will be made public eventually.

In my opinion, this article is important because it explains who the ADF are and how the Ugandans are fighting against them. Before reading this article, I had no idea what the Allied Democratic Forces was, and this article did a good job of educating me and probably other readers as well. For the region, this is important because it involves a terrorist organization in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For the region, this means there will be a lot of conflict and fighting, which is already being reported on by civilians. In the article, civilians stated that they have seen tanks driving around on the streets. While reading the article, the author also provided some historical context as well by mentioning the creation of the ADF in the mid-1990s.

Relating this to class, you could talk about the different types of power being used to combat the ADF. Military forces are being used to fight, which is a short-term element of power. You could also look at this from a level of analysis point of view, with this being a regional level type of conflict since it is happening in Sub-Saharan Africa. You could also go down to the state level and relate it to the states of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The last thing that could relate to class is that you could consider the ADF a non-state actor because it is a terrorist group. Since the ADF is Islamic-led, it can be considered a rebel/terrorist group with a religious goal.
