This article is about how the United Nations is now just making Uganda pay the Democratic Republic of Congo for a brutal war that they had in the 1990s. The court broke down the payment of 325 millions dollars of into different categories of damages. It assessed $225m for loss of life and other damages to persons which includes rape, conscription of child soldiers and the displacement of up to 500,000 people. Additionally another 40 million for property damage and 60 million for damages to natural resources which account for plundering of gold, diamonds, timber and other goods by Ugandan forces or rebels they supported. Uganda must pay the sum in five yearly installments of $65 million to start in September of this year.

This matter is important due to the steep amount of reparation payment that Uganda is being forced to pay with the comparatively minor impact of their actions. In reference to the implications of Uganda’s actions Judge Donoghue said there was, “insufficient evidence to support the DRC’s claim of 180,000 civilian deaths for which Uganda owes reparation”. This means with the evidence presented the number of deaths for which Uganda owes reparations falls in the range of 10,000 to 15,000 persons, explaining that 325 million is too much per person.

This relates to what we have been talking about in class that the main objectives of the United Nations are the maintenance of international peace and security and by making Uganda pay for the devastating 1998-2003 conflict that left thousands of people dead it. This leads to international cooperation and the well-being of the people for the world. Although this conflict happened over 20 years ago it is goes that Congo is getting some kid of reparation payment for Uganda wrongdoing.
