Recently it was confirmed that the total number of COVID-19 cases from all African countries has reached over 11 million. Despite having around 270 million people vaccinated against COVID-19, countries in Africa have been struggling to obtain, distribute and administer vaccines, which is slowing down the vaccination process. South Africa has been the hardest hit country in Africa with over 3.7 million cases currently and over 100,000 deaths. Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia and Kenya have also been reported to have relatively high numbers of COVID-19 cases.

This article highlights some of the issues that countries in Africa have been facing regarding COVID-19. One of the main issues is that many countries are having difficulties obtaining and distributing vaccines. One of the main ways African countries have been getting vaccines is they are being donated by other countries. The issue with this is that they are often closer to their due date then desired so large batches of vaccines will expire before they are able to be administered to people.

This article relates to class because it is showing how the continent of Africa has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It also shows how other countries and NGOs have been trying to assist African countries with the pandemic, however, help from other countries is often lower quality than is desired or necessary and does not do very much to help the overall situation improve. This is shown by their low vaccination rates of around 25% for the entire continent, despite the vaccines that have been contributed by other countries.
