Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president arrived in Uganda for the first time in four years as the relationship between the two countries is starting to improve following longtime tensions. Kagame arrived in Kampala Uganda in order to meet with the president of Uganda Yoweri Museveni as well as attending Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son’s 48th birthday party. Kainerugaba has played a large part in repairing the hostile relationship between the two neighboring countries. Kainerugaba has even helped lead to the talks that reopened the border between the two countries after three years of it being closed, and was even said to have been a part of the visit of Rwanda’s president.
I think that this is a good thing for both countries involved. With what is currently going on between Russia and Ukraine, it is probably pushing the two neighboring countries to improve the tensions between them in order to try and avoid situations like what is happening now in Ukraine. I think that it is interesting that Yoweri Museveni’s son had a part to play in this and that Paul Kagame attended his 48th birthday party. It is really good to see two countries resolving tensions at this time, especially with the rising tensions going on in the nearby continent of Asia.
This relates back to class through levels of analysis. Looking at it through the state level, both countries are looking to improve the rocky relationship that they have had for years right around the time that Russia attacked its bordering country Ukraine. Uganda and Rwanda are taking these steps to improve their relationship in order to try and prevent anything close to that aggression happening between the bordering countries. On an Individual level, Muhoozi Kainerugaba played a huge role in the two countries’ relationship becoming less strained. I don’t know what prompted him to start pushing for the countries to make up, but something pushed him to start the talks.
