in northwest Cameroon assailants entered a bar and shot a journalist dead. This is according to the local journalist union the 3rd killing of a journalist this year. This comes after the killing of 2 journalists near the capital of Yaounde which has led the UN to express concern over the media’s safety in cameroon. The Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists has called for an investigation into the journalist killed at the bar. The local police spokesperson has said they had no knowledge of the attack and taht no group has claimed responsibility. These attacks have roots in a conflict between Cameroon and separatists in the anglophone region ( calling themselves ambazonia) that has turned violent resulting in violent atrocities being committed by both sides and now media being killed.
These killings have to due with cameroons war with south cameroon and parts of northwest cameroons anglophone region which has declared itself independent and is calling itself Ambazonia. originally just mass protest cameroon suppressed a protest in 2017 which then led to actual war and killing. the wr as cause mass evacuation and thousands dead with ambazonia now having claim to parts of the countryside and populations in the major cities. there’s been attempts at peace with switzerland mediating talks but they broke down. i believe that these killings will only increase in frequency as the two forces are very much intent on continuing the war and not peace stalks have constantly broke down and leaders have grip and griped. I doubt the UN will get involved in a meaningful way at least right now.
As to what this connects to in class I’d connect it to media coverage. The media has always been a great way to drum up support for opposition for a side and these forces know that and are now targeting journalists and the like and murdering them. This connects talks about the UN as they would like to open an investigation but really can’t as there’s now obvious evidence that the government is the one doing these killings or at least allowing them. Lastly this relates to statehood as ambazonia has declared itself a separate entity but isn’t recognized by many and so is seen as a seceding traitorous part of Cameroon that Cameroon is within their rights to take back though many are disapproving of the way it’s being done.
