Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, is the head of political affairs and the counter terrorism focal point for the African Union. The first ever African Defense Ministers Conference organized by Ethiopia in Addis Ababa at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum took place the morning of October 15. During the conference, Babatunde Abayomi Taiwo, an AU official, expressed great gratitude for Ethiopia hosting the meeting. Ethiopia positively contributed to the peace and security in Africa and globally which was recognized by many during the large conference. Taiwo highlighted Ethiopia’s great contributions to the AU and the United Nations since 1951, focusing primarily on its leadership when it comes to keeping peace in Somalia and other regions. Ethiopia has played key roles within the AU such as their force in Korea and now being a major role in Somalia as part of the African Union’s peace mission in the country.
The need for combined efforts among African nations have been voiced by many in order to address escalating conflicts between rising armed groups, as well as problems such as food insecurity and climate crises. Components of Africa’s stability and sovereignty could be threatened by these growing tensions within the continent. It has been concluded that the clearest way to resolve these issues is to take a unified approach against transnational threats and promote Africa’s role in the global community. The conference was interpreted as a pivot point for African nations and their commitment to peace and continental security by means of reducing violence and promoting military cooperation among nations. This will allow a the unified African nations to combat terrorism and focus on global and continental issues. When it comes to national interest, it is seen that it is in all of these African nations’ best interest to promote peace throughout the tension-filled continent. As these various nations and states unify, security will increase, and issues will resolve as a result.
