Just recently, after more than a hundred years, the UK has declared it is giving up sovereignty to the Chagos Islands located in the Indian Ocean. The UK has decided to give possession of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after years of back and forth negotiations. The UK and a joint statement together and this ended years of friction between these countries. For the deal to go forward, the US-UK base will remain in Diego Garcia, located on the Chagos Islands so these countries can remain secure during a time of rising conflict between western countries and China. This treaty means the UK will provide support for Mauritius like annual payments and investments to grow infrastructure. Mauritius will also be able to start resettling on the Chagos Islands besides Diego Garcia and keeping this military base will ensure more security for both the UK and Mauritius. Although this treaty has brought much peace and unity among the UK and Mauritius, Chagossians feel they have been excluded from voicing their opinions and the drafting of the treaty. Because of the UK’s history of colonization and forcibly removing Chagossians from their homes in the 70s, African nations are not fond of the UK. The timing of this treaty was not random but could be because of the UK’s effort to gain more support from African nations and grow their international affairs. Although the UK has been reluctant to hand over territory or sovereignty to Mauritius and the Chagos Islands, this was a very monumental moment for both countries as they came together

This treaty is very significant in showing the effects of colonialism and addressing the forcible removal of many Chagossians in the 60s and 70s. It shows the UK is making amends for their wrong doings and it promotes peace between both countries. This act of diplomacy is very important to furthering international law and promoting greater diplomacy between countries. Maintaining the Diego Garcia military base is very crucial for the US; it will be important in securing trade routes and defence against China and India. This event has affected Mauritius by strengthening their regional and international affairs as well as their legitimacy in the global sphere.

I think reciprocity is playing a role in this event where both countries agree on an exchange of benefits. With many negotiations the UK and Mauritius have found outcomes that are advantageous for both countries. Mauritius has allowed the US/UK Diego Garcia military base to still stand which is very beneficial for the security of the US and the UK. In return, the UK has given sovereignty to the Chagos Islands and given that territory to Mauritius. Both of their interests are taken into consideration and both reap great benefits.
