Security analysts in Nigeria are voicing concerns after reports of a new insurgent group operating from the country’s northwestern region known as the Lakurawas. The group reportedly originated in the Sahel region, particularly Mali and Niger. Defense officials released the discovery to journalists and asked everyone to remain vigilant. They originated in July after Niger’s military coup disrupted military patrols along the border. The defense officials state they know exactly where they are and that the terrorists took advantage of the military breach to come infiltrate Nigeria. Nigeria has already been struggling with insurgents, a group called Boko Haram opposed to western education. Its emergence signals of kidnappings for ransom in western Nigeria are frightening. ECOWAS, which is chaired by Nigeria’s President, sanctioned Niger after its coup last July. Niger ended up leaving ECOWAS.
Nigeria, a country with already little resources, is going to be hit hard by this new military terrorist group. The group seems to be coming with a vengeance given all of the information we have, and Nigeria should definitely be worried for its safety in the upcoming years. The attacks are in response to Niger receiving sanctions. Africa, as hard as it tries to unite itself, is still struggling greatly. ECOWAS had three members leave this year, one being Niger. They keep having conflict with each other and some countries seem to be unable to stop conflict in their country. Africa, historically a continent that has struggled as a whole, seems to be heading towards brighter days. This is certainly a bump in the road though. Nigeria is going to struggle being head of ECOWAS while dealing with the threat of Niger with low resources and money in their country.
Niger is using hard military power because of its anger with Nigeria for the sanctions placed on them as a country. In this area of the world, there is no world police. Nigeria just has to defend itself. There is no country to keep Niger’s terrorist organizations in line. This terrorist organization is probably trying to balance the power within these countries by bringing down Nigeria. This demonstrates the fluidity of alliances because Niger and Nigeria were allies with the ECOWAS, but Niger got sanctions and left so now they aren’t allies anymore because they didn’t feel benefitted by the alliance.
