November 13, 2024, Somaliland frantically went to the polls for the highly anticipated election result for the 2024 Presidency term. This election is vital to the country, since this state is seeking stability along with international recognition. Although significant, rising tensions with neighboring states Somalia and Ethiopia arises. Disputes over the port of Berbera, situated strategically on Somaliland’s coast, increases tension between the three countries. Ethiopia’s involvement in development is opposed by Somalia, vouching for itself due to Berbera being situated in Somalia. In 1991, Somaliland gained independence from Somalia, but has yet to be internationally recognized. Now, Ethiopia and Somaliland team up to develop a port to undermine Berbera.
It is evident that Somaliland is rather displeased with Somalia, so much so that it is willing to team up with Ethiopia. All too familiar, this reminds me of how the United States teamed up with the French in the American Revolution. There was a common enemy, so we teamed up to take them out. This is exactly what is happening to Somalia, except it is pure economic warfare. A bitter taste is more than likely left is Somaliland’s mouth due to not being recognized because of the United States. The United States fails to recognize Somaliland because Americas close ties with Somalia, offering protection and promoting stability throughout the state.
Somaliland teaming up with Ethiopia is very realist of them. Outlines in fluidity of alliances, Somaliland is creating ties with Ethiopia to get what they want, and are acting solely in national interest. Similarly to the alliance of the allies in WW1, this partnership between Somaliland and Ethiopia seems temporary, just long enough to reap the benefits as a team against a common enemy. As opposed to that of Liberal Theory, where the approach would be along the parameters for the common good. Regionaly, economic feuds seems to be just starting up, but time will tell how these three nations come out.
