Nigeria is actively seeking South Africa’s support to attain full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank. This plan was initiated by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission in Cape Town. South Africa assumed the presidency of the G20 on December 1, 2024. Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu also urged South Africa to support accelerated peace efforts in Sudan, highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to regional stability. In response, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Roland Lamola, acknowledged Nigeria’s requests and emphasized the importance of strengthening these relations.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and most populated nation. By joining BRICS, a international group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Nigeria aims to add its voice in global economic discussions and advocate for “the Global South” interests. The BRICS nations have been key in promoting a multipolar world order, challenging Western dominance in global affairs. Nigeria’s inclusion would not only increase its economic prospects but also enhance Africa’s representation within these influential groups. South Africa’s support is crucial, given its existing membership in both the G20 and BRICS. As the only African representative in these forums, South Africa’s endorsement could facilitate Nigeria’s integration, promoting unified African stance on global issues.

To promote its addition to BRICS, Nigeria should engage in more diplomatic efforts, emphasizing mutual benefits and shared goals with existing BRICS and G20 members. Collaborating with South Africa to present a strong African agenda can strengthen Nigeria’s case. Additionally, Nigeria should demonstrate its commitment to economic reforms, political stability, and regional peace, which are factors that align with the objectives of these international groups. By showcasing its potential contributions to global economic growth and stability, Nigeria can prove itself as a valuable addition to both BRICS and the G20, therefore enhancing its role in international affairs.
