Hospitals in eastern Congo are struggling to contain the mpox outbreak as the M23 rebel group’s takeover of Goma and Bukavu disrupts medical care forcing patients to flee and causing severe shortages of supplies. With damaged hospitals and limited disease tracking cases continue to rise yet reporting remains unreliable due to the conflict. Authorities are working to establish a humanitarian corridor for aid but many patients remain untreated. Meanwhile, the region is also battling cholera, measles and other outbreaks further straining an already overwhelmed healthcare system.
Congo has a very good source of minerals that Rwanda wants so sending in the m23 rebel group is there way to try and gain control of the region and become richer. Rwanda is already a very wealthy african country because of how good there agriculture is from the rich volcanic soil. They also are a main trade hub for all of african goods making it a strong power they are just missing the mineral wealth that they want and could get from the congo. Congo to treat this has made a deal with the united states to give them the minerals to combat the rebel group. The sad thing about this is that with all this fighting congo is struggling with outbreaks in disease that could spread rapidly and make it very easy to take control with a weakened government.
Rwanda is kind of in a proxy war where they aren’t fighting congo with there direct military they are just supporting rebel groups to attack. Now that they have taken over Goma and Bukavu they have disrupted care and causing people to flee without being treated. This has had a huge impact on monkey poxs spreading more rapidly than ever. This is weakening the government making it a much easier fight to get the natural resources that rwanda is after. Monkey poxs is also not the only disease they are dealing with just setting them back more as the conflict grows.
