An attack on a military base in northern Burkina Faso killed multiple soldiers, while a separate assaults’ in the south left dozens of civilians dead. The army base in Djibo came under attack on Sunday morning, and a local police station and market were also targeted. Soldiers, militiamen, and civilians were among the dead. This base within Djibo has come under attack multiple times, including in October of 2022, when 60 civilians and soldiers were killed in one of the most deadly attacks in the region. However, no militant group has claimed responsibility for these attacks, but an Al Qaeda affiliate JNIM operates nearby.
Burkina Faso’s military government has faced lots of criticism by human rights groups over measures it has taken under the guise of national security. The Human Rights Watch stated that the army had “participated in the massacre of more than 130, possibly more, ethnic Fulani people. A government spokesperson has commented on videos and images circulating online that stated the killings as disinformation campaigns and false information. This government in Burkina Faso has been oppressing its citizens, and maybe this attack is a direct revolt against the oppressive actions of the government. The Burkina Faso military may respond with more killings if they assume these attacks were undertaken by local militia, or may launch a counterstrike against the Al Qaeda affiliate JNIM or other sponsored terrorist group. Citizens will live in fear of retribution and potentially more attacks.
Human rights within Burkina Faso are almost nonexistent. With the takeover by Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a coup in 2022, he promised the turning of the tide against jihadist insurgency that spread across the region. However, the military power he wields also allows him to silence certain ethnic minorities within the country. These regional and ethnic cleavages had divided a country and lead to instability in the area.
