As president Trump of the United States continues to crackdown on illegal immigration to the United States, people from all over the world have been affected. With deportations sweeping America, Africans have also been caught up in the fray. Now Ghana seems to be a saving grace in a way for some of these people. In some cases deportation to their home countries is not possible, so Ghana has accepted the responsibility of getting them home. One notable thing is the Ghana is like AB blood, a universal recipient. West Africans do not need a Visa to enter the state. This makes it much easier for deportees to find their ways home when no option into the continent seems possible.
After reading the article I have come to think that this solution has some problems but I don’t see a better one. Obviously west Africa is not the safest place to be traveling hundreds of miles. But this is what will be asked of those once they enter Ghana. The article refers to it as, “Facilitating their return to their home countries…” If someone like a Jihadist group in Cameroon heard about this mass amount of vulnerable people just going along open roads it definitely sounds like their MO to go after them. On the other hand I don’t see a better option, Ghana is already doing more than they should have to for these people so we shouldn’t expect them to provide protection for these immigrants.
The biggest shareholder responsible for this event is definitely the United States, they are directly responsible for the deportations and for finding ways to get them home. I think that the US is handling the situation with caution and leaving it to the powers in the area. I would say this is better than sticking our head in places where it is not wanted. Ghana is also a big player in this even, they have stepped up along with some other west African nations to help find ways of getting these people home. Finally, the people themselves are notable players, they are the ones who either overstayed their visas or didn’t have one at all, but they also are the ones that are needing to receive the aid from both the US and Ghana.
When I think about how this article could connect to the topics we cover in class I think back to two things. One, I remember when we were in class thinking about stateless nation. A lot of the places that these people come out of are poorly drawn nations, they force people groups that are largely contrasted to work together, at the root of the topic is illegal immigration. People don’t just do that for no reason, I think that there is a deeper and more systemic issue with this topic rather than just deportation. But a question of what could we do to help people not feel the need to leave their nations in such desperation as to enter our nation illegally. Second, I think about when we had that Ven diagram about the different parts of Global Politics, and rights and justice one hundred percent fits this story. I mean for one you have to worry about the rights of the people getting sent across the atlantic and through some of the most dangerous parts of the world. You also have to think about the justice of someone entering a nation illegally and for another nation to have to take on that burden.
