The South African Rand has taken a massive hit as tensions in the Middle East have intensified over the past few days.
The Rand, which has never been particularly stable, is fluctuating outside its usual trends to an alarming degree. From Friday to Monday, the Rand fell 1.6% at 16.15 against the US dollar.
The dollar gained 0.3% against a number of currencies following the assassination of Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Gold – a major export of South Africa – just hit its highest point in four weeks.
The issue of the Rand’s decline has the potential to cause large fallout throughout the region, as South Africa’s economy is the strongest on the continent. The weakening of the Rand is projected to increase the cost of imported goods, which will directly contribute to higher inflation in the country. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will surely be pressured, in the coming days and weeks, to raise interest rates in an attempt to combat inflation. Foreign investors are more likely to withdraw holdings in South African assets, which will lead to more capital flight and overall volatility. Additionally, the purchasing power of South Africans will drop as the Rand falls down the ranks in the world economy, making international travel and imported goods significantly more expensive.
In terms of foreign relations and issues of sovereignty and power, South Africa is now forced into an uncomfortable position. A weaker Rand inflates the cost of servicing foreign-denominated debt, restricting the South African government’s ability to fund social services and infrastructure, which can force compliance with international lender conditions. If the economic decline continues, it is likely that South Africa will see a related loss in skilled labor – a phenomenon known as Brain Drain.
South African power is stable for now, but if the conflict in the Middle East continues and becomes a long-term issue, the market is likely to continue its decline.
