The DRC is centralizing geological data. They are doing this through a $180 million dollar deal made with the private contractor, Xcalibur, a Spanish based company known for similar jobs. A stark difference between this expansion of geological data mapping in the congo versus states like Australia, is that the DRC is going to keep all data that the contractor finds, in a state run data bank. This data is obviously important to the DRC due to the amount of cobalt within the state. Only 20% of the country has been explored and scanned for resources. Mary Congan officials say that this is going to be a huge asset for the country and it may bring about a change in the way that ‘capital’ flows through the country. Additionally, this is taking place as tensions between China and the US rise over critical minerals which both states import significant amounts of. Statements from DRC officials have put the operational date for the bank at the end of 2026.
As we continue to see a rise in tensions between the US and China as they meet via their foreign interests, in my opinions, Oil/energy is the only thing more important than critical minerals for the US to try and keep the Chinese away from in the coming decade. So for states like the DRC we need to start bettering relations and if possible we need to make some sort of deal with them which ideally would include language that would force them to become more western leaning rather than trying to play both sides of the fight as they are doing now. The DRC is doing well to better their position, I could see something similar to Saadia Arabia happening.
The DRC will most likely continue with the foreign policy that they have chosen for the near future unless something huge internally happens. The only way I see the DRC moving away from this geological data study would be if internal problems whatever that may mean for the state, where to get so bad that the contractors inside of the DRC, those being from the MNC XCalibur, would be forced to leave the country. Both the US and China will most likely go into a trade/bidding war with each other causing them to possibly make the DRC very wealthy.
I can connect this event to the concepts of Globalization and to Power. For globalization, the entire point of this problem is the thought that the US and China need to import foreign metals in order to make products for their people. We see this as evidence of the interconnected nature of the modern world. For power, we see the DRC in this case making the Chinese and the Americans do things that they would not have necessarily done otherwise. This is a clear example for the definition of power.
