The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Forum turned a decade old on November 4th. AGOA is a U.S. Congress initiative to strengthen trade ties with African nations. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai emphasized the intrinsic value of the U.S.-Africa partnership, citing historical and cultural ties. AGOA faces mixed reactions among African governments, set to expire in 2025 but likely to be renewed under President Biden’s support. However, Uganda, Central African Republic, Gabon, and Niger face exclusion, impacting their economies. South Africa, spared from exclusion despite a diplomatic spat, remains a key participant. The U.S. is mobilizing government departments under Prosper Africa to foster deals and enhance AGOA development.

The American-African partnership has been emphasized through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The partnership holds significance for various reasons. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai talked about the intrinsic value in historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties, forming the cornerstone of this relationship. Maintaining this connection is crucial not only for economic reasons but also for fostering understanding and cooperation. President Biden’s clear support for renewing AGOA demonstrates recognition of its importance. The ongoing efforts by the U.S. to enhance trade ties through Africa shows a commitment to the African people. However, the exclusion of Uganda, Central African Republic, Gabon, and Niger from AGOA renewal highlights the arising issues. Should people be cut from the partnership just because they have a different view from the United States.

In international relations class we talked about countries having their own national interests. The African countries national interest is most likely to help build better infrastructure and better lives for average citizens. The American national interest can be seen in President Biden’s support, aligning with U.S. national interests in fostering economic ties and influence in the region. This not only creates economic partners but the influence in the region helps to box off the heartland controlled by Russia. Because the United states is against Russia it would help the United states to have a control around the borders.
