UK Ministers have announced £5.5 million aid to help research the mpox virus that broke out in the Dem. Rep. Of the Congo and is spreading to other countries. This plan has been proposed and put into place to help protect the UK public from future outbreaks of mpox that may occur. The funding will go specifically toward the pox vaccine’s research, development, and distribution. While the UK has already acquired vaccines, they wish to invest more money into the research to help create better vaccines. The mpox outbreak was declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization back in August of 2024.
This isn’t necessarily the UK trying to help a developing country but the UK trying to protect itself. The UK has been getting many refugees from the DRC, who may unknowingly be bringing the pox virus with them. While this money will most likely benefit from creating a vaccine, the UK seems unlikely to keep much of it in the DRC. Due to the large amount of funding, the UK may try to take a large portion of the vaccine they have created for themselves instead of leaving it to the DRC, where the outbreak initially occurred.
While the DRC may welcome the funding, it may end up fighting the UK over vaccine distributions. The UK, as stated in the article, wants vaccines to protect its Citizens; because of its funding, it is possible that it may claim a larger portion of the vaccine. The DRC could try to retaliate but would likely be to no avail as it is a smaller country and was willing to accept funding from the UK.
this is a matter of National security; the UK pertains specifically to public health. After 2020, the world is much more worried about viral outbreaks. Nobody wants to return to the COVID days of shutdowns and economic panic. The UK feels that investing money into the vaccine, even if developed overseas, gives them a better chance of not repeating what happened with COVID.
