Sierra Leone’s largest diamond producer has halted operations and laid off nearly its entire workforce of more than 1,000 employees following a dispute over pay and working conditions. Workers at the mine went on strike in December of 2024 but suspended their walkout to allow negotiations with the company. They then walked out again in early March. The president of the Limited Workers’ union, Kainessie, stated that the workers had only been receiving roughly 30 percent of their value of their salaries because they were using an outdated exchange rate from U.S Dollar to local currency from 2016.

This diamond mine within Sierra Leone is the largest and provides jobs for hundreds of locals within the region. This means a large portion of the population are without jobs and unable to support families. If these conditions continue, and jobs are not offered, people may take to rioting or lobbying the government for help. The First Lady, Fatima Bio, was accused by the mining company of fanning the flames in the dispute when she visited the area after a walkout and addressed the workers. However, the mining company, Koidu Limited has suffered serious financial loss exceeding roughly 16 million dollars from the strike. Tensions between the first lady and Koidu Limited remain high. It appears the first lady is going to bat for people within the region, and is working to resolve the issues. However the company and the first lady are on bad terms, and finding common ground may be difficult.

This situation is hard for this part of the world as those who work at the mine have people who rely upon them for income and food. The layoff of roughly a 1000 people seriously endangers those who were employed there as job availability and security are guaranteed. This situation could get worse as no outside organization steps in to assist those without jobs. And this region of Sierra Leone may become increasingly violent.
