In Colombia the UN has placed troops in zones to verify a ceasefire and cessation of hostiles. Recently, four troops were sent home due an incident in which they danced with FARC rebels at a New Years Eve party. This may seem to be an extreme course of action for a little bit of fun, but letting this type of behavior slide, may show weakness in the UN. This could cause the rebels to stop taking the ceasefire seriously. With the situation finally starting to become under control; the UN must take caution to remain being seen as “top dog”. The troops that were involved in the incident were sent back to their homes, costing them their jobs. President Juan Manuel Santos stated that there were “delays” and “problems” during a visit to Mesetas, in the central department of Meta, which serves as the largest demobilization zone, with about 650 rebels expected. With this in mind, the decision to terminate the troops was reasonable, as they were in high risk zones. There is no room for mistake in a sensitive area that involves the lives of over five hundred people. The UN must keep things in strict order to keep the country safe. With the rise in “delays” and “problems” in other zones, the UN should continue to take harsh action, including terminations, to ensure safety of the public. With so many people counting on the UN, strong actions are imperative to ensure the trust of Colombian people. With this incident causing such an uproar it should show the rebels and the UN troops that this is not a game and this operation is to be taken seriously; even when you’re bringing in the new year.
