Analysis Post: Will Cuba embrace the internet revolution?

I think the expansion of internet access could help accelerate economic development. If people can access more information, hopefully it will lead to a more educated and more skilled workforce that can drive innovation. If the embargo is dropped, a strong Cuban economy could become an advantageous trade partner for the U.S. Critics of lifting the embargo say it will flood U.S. market with cheaper goods, harming U.S. businesses. However, China has recently increased trade with Cuba: A special report by teleSUR in 2016 pointed out, “…In 2015, trade between China and Cuba increased by 57 percent, reaching some US$1.6 billion according to Beijing officials, while in past months direct flights began to operate between Beijing and Havana.” It is not in the U.S. interest to have one of their biggest competitors right in their backyard. Greater internet access could also increase the number of tourism dollars flowing into the economy. It could help modernize Cuba. However, the poorest people, the ones that have the most to gain, may be unable to reap the benefits if costs remain high. It also remains to be seen if Raul Castro’s successor backs up his previous assertions and promotes internet access. Embracing the internet revolution could cause him to lose some control over his country and lead Cuba away from a communist path.
