The people of Nicaragua have been protesting against the government for the past five months. The people started protesting because they had been oppressed for so long and finally decided to start to fight for their freedom. Then other individuals, such as Reyna Rodriguez, started to join the fight after “seeing so many young people among the dead.” However, this fight may not be worth the cost of lives especially with the death tolls continuing to rise.
The high deaths of citizens are mostly caused by pro-government militia groups. They are seen wearing masks, shooting live bullets, and making arrests on the streets. There are many people who believe that these groups are backed by the government even though the government says that they are terrorists groups.
While this state of unrest may be slowing down today, it wont be ending anytime soon, especially when looking at the fact that many people are just joining the protest over five months after it started. Some Nicaraguans even want U.S. involvement to help establish peace. It will be challenging for Nicaragua as a country to survive through this ordeal, and it is possible that President Ortega may lose power if the protesters are successful.
