Once legalization of cannabis occurs on October 17th Montreal will be allowing its police officers to consume cannabis off duty as long as they are still fit to work. I think that this is not a good idea, if officers are allowed to smoke off duty and they do it consistently then it might become to routine for them, and it’ll only be a matter of time until they start smoking on the job. In other provinces in Canada the rules are stricter for police officers, in most places officers will not be able to smoke cannabis for a month before any shift, and in one province officers won’t be able to smoke at all. I think this is a better approach than what the government is doing in Montreal, this is because officers are supposed to enforce the law and that takes a clear mind, so anything that could possibly impair their thinking and how they do their job should not be allowed, they need to be able to keep the population safe so they can’t be thinking about anything else besides their job.
