One of my four articles for this region report cycle was about Guatemalan President, Jimmy Morales and his bid to expel the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) from the country. The President’s actions took place due to the CICIG beginning an investigation on Morales and the alleged funding irregularities in his 2015 election campaign. The CICIG was originally backed by Morales as they prosecuted many corrupt senior officials in the country’s government, but when they launched an investigation against the president and threatened to prosecute him, he attempted to expel the UN-backed agency from the country. It appeared the president would be successful in banning the agency until the Guatemalan Supreme Court blocked Morales’ notion.

After reading the article I am primarily wondering what will happen to Morales once the CICIG continues their investigation. If Morales felt it was necessary to ban the organization from the country than it would seem he has something to hide from them regarding these allegations of corruption. Also, seeings as the CICIG is backed by the UN, I wonder what the impact throughout the UN will be and how those countries views of Guatemala could be affected. Between South and Central America it feels there is some of the most government corruption of any region in the world so while in many countries, this type of situation would be more surprising to me, seeings as the region i’m vering does include South and Central America I find it almost as a normality to be discussing an article about a corrupt politician.
