On Thursday, Brazil’s ex-President Michel Temer was arrested on corruption charges. An anti-corruption investigation has been put into action since 2014, known as “Car Wash,” and has led to 10 arrest warrants being carried out and 26 more put into place since Thursday. Temer was only president during 2016 to 2018, however he was hit with charges regarding management contracts in several ports within Sao Paulo. The charges were disrupted by his administration while he was in office; however, once out of office he had no legal protection from his cabinet. The formal charges are, “crimes of corruption, criminal organisations and money laundry,” all which are serious offenses.
The judge has arrested Temer and placed him in a Federal Police office in Rio. This type of arrest is only for those that have the potential to flee or is continuously committing the crime at hand. Temer could, and should be kept under house arrest for his crimes, and his lawyers are applying for a habeas corpus plea to allow this to happen. Temer’s political party, Brazilian Democratic Movement, has been vocal about Temer and the accusations. Temer and his party have denied his wrongdoings and will cooperate within the courts.
After reading this article on Brazil’s former president, it cannot go unsaid with what is happening in the United States at the moment. Between the investigations and accusations of President Trump, it’s hard to determine whether they will continue on after he is no longer president. The States have had their fair share of mess-up presidents, but the country always seems to move on with its life and learn from their mistakes. With the new rise in technology and new forms of releasing information to the public, it’s very difficult to be famous and not be watched by someone 24/7. The advancements in social media and news outlets have allowed for people to slip up so easily, and this unfortunately is wreaking havoc on public figures all over the world.
