The economy of Brazil is based on farming and other resources. However, the issue of whether to protect the environment or economy is immensely debated. The amount of farmland is deteriorating so therefore the Amazon basin seems more attractive. The President of Brazil is for exploiting the natural resources and the space that the Amazon provides. Ironically, the country that is home to most of the basin would like to harness what it has to offer more than outside countries. The economy of Brazil is reliant on the resources found there. Therefore, destruction of the Amazon does not take precedence over the economic stability of the nation. The situation is undesirable because protecting the basin would be ideal, but the flourishing of economy is in the best interest of the country. The recent presidential election has brought more division within the nation, keeping the controversial subject at the height of interest. The Amazon basin takes up the majority of the country and the environmental impact will greatly be evident, but the initial concern the the functioning of the economy. Immediate environmental reforms will hinder the stability and the capability of the Brazilian economy. The nation of Brazil is in support of the big farmers that provide much revenue for the economy, however this encourages the deforestation of the Amazon basin in order to have more farmland. The land that is in use now is losing its nutrients and is unable to produce as much food which futhers pushes the need for the land offered by the basin. Another impact on the basin is the smaller farmers. Even though they do not produce much for the economy of the nation, they overuse land in order to survive. They are less concerned with the global effects of their actions because they need to focus on their day to day lives. Overall, farming in the major issue that leads to the destruction and shrinking of the Amazon basin.
