“Today is a great day for science and humanity”, says the Manhattan-based drugmaker, Pfizer. As the world has been waiting axiously for some good news, Pfizer and the German biotech firm, BioNTech, announced on Monday, the development of a coronavirus vaccine that is more than 90% effective.
Along with this announcement, BioNTech and Pfizer released their data from their influential Phase 3 study after 94/43,538 of the trial’s participants contracted the virus. The data revealed that seven days after patients received the second of the two doses, the vaccine proved to be more than 90 percent effective. These participants were protected from the Coronavirus 28 days after initiating the cource for the vaccination.
The companies declared they will test again when a new round of participants get sick again. An independent task force has been examining the data and has not reported any saftey concerns. This Coronavirus vaccine efficiency has been compared to the measles vaccine, which is about 93 perecent effective (with one dose), and about 61 percent higher than the flu vaccine during the 2018-2019 flu season.
Pfizer plans to ask the US Food and Drug Administration to approve this vaccine for emergency use by the end of November. The company still has to prove that the vaccine is safe, which they expect to reach in the upcoming week/s. The recent news has resulted in Pfizer’s stock price in premarket trading, rising about 14.3 percent ($41.61) as of 7:28 a.m.
In addition to Pfizer’s vaccine, in the U.S, three other vaccines are currently in their lare Phase 3 studies, working with candidates from Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson.
Pfizer says, “With today’s news, we are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis.” As the United States heads into their second wave of the Coronavirus, this news is life-changing. As of now, Covid-19 deaths are at an all time high. Thousands of families have been affected from this deadly virus and in result of this news, the U.S will be able to begin to heal, focus on other detrimental issues, and life will finally start to feel normal again. The companies proof of developing a vaccine with a 90% or higher efficency rate will grant trust from many Americans, and will make citizens feel more comfortable when getting the vaccine.
This news is not only detrimental to the United States, but around the globe. This global crisis has left over a million people dead across the world. Thousands have suffered in their own way, in every country, regarding the Coronavirus. Not only will the U.S be known for solving this crisis (with the invention of a vaccine), but will be remebered and respected for saving thousands of lives that could’ve been lost in the upcoming second wave. The trading and exchanging of this U.S vaccine could potentially repair foreign relationships, and continue to endure healthy alliances that the United States currently has.
