Mexico has recently sent 10,000 troops to its southern border in order to detain migrants, according to a spokesperson for the White House. The United States is putting more pressure on the regional governments to slow the arrival of migrants at the United States border. In March, Mexico launched enforcement operations with the intention of intercepting immigrants before they arrived at the U.S. border; along with these enforcements, they also began to crack down more on their border with Guatemala. As of March 22, Mexico had 9,000 troops along its northern and southern borders. According to a member of the Mexican National Guard, arrests have doubled in the past few weeks due to the greater presence of law enforcement in these regions. Guatemala and Honduras have also been deploying security forces to stop migrants planning to cross the United States border. There is not an agreement between Guatemala and the United States nor Honduras and the United States in regard to border security efforts according to a spokesperson.

It’s good that these other countries are able to work with the United States government in order to slow the flow of immigrants into the United States and prevent the detainment and separation of families at the border. However, as more arrests are being made, the issue now becomes where to detain these people and if they are just sent back to their original country or held at whichever border they are attempting to cross. Also as more security is being put in place, those who are trying to escape their country and create a new more prosperous life for themselves are unable to do so. Without the ability to leave, this could become more of a human rights’ conflict in some countries.

The United States is applying geostrategy based on the countries they are choosing to apply pressure on in order to obtain their goal of slowing the flow of immigrants into the country. By working with Mexico they are applying direct pressure to the issue.
