There are 20 candidates running in this years Peruvian election for President. Pre-election polls show no sign of a clear winner, but from what they can tell it seems like the favorite is the center-right candidate Yonhy Lescano, with 10% of the vote. However, this candidate is closely followed by the progressive Veronika Mendoza and conservative Hernando de Soto, both with 9%. The candidates each have their own very different policies and perspectives that they have proposed to the people, and based on the indecisive feedback it will be interesting to see who remains in the election. Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former dictator, Alberto Fujimori, is also running in this years election. This gives the Peruvian population a lot more to consider when deciding on a candidate because they are also being faced with a reminder of their past.

It is interesting how one of the candidates compares himself to American politicians, such as Joe Biden and Donald Trump. This makes me think that the issues and the form of government in Peru is much more similar to those of the United States than I had originally thought. The Peruvian people are being placed in a somewhat delicate situation as there are so many candidates running for the Presidency; all of them proposing very unique and different ideas.

Peru is a representation of the effects of liberal hegemony as they are a democratic society with a multi-party system. The United States has spread its ideals of liberal values and democracy to other countries such as Peru, which is the direct definition of liberal hegemony. These ideals are conveyed through their multi-party election system they are currently having in the country. Peru’s current government is a recent democracy as they established their Constitution in 1993, making their situation even more delicate as they are a young government.
