Argentina has made plans to enhance their pandemic lockdown after facing a severe second wave of Covid-19. The amount of recent cases and deaths has broken records in the country over the past week, causing concern among Argentina’s population. They plan to go into complete lockdown until May 31st, with the hope that they will knock out this second wave earlier rather than later. Argentina’s President, Alberto Fernandez, says that they are “living the worst moment since the pandemic began.” As they are trying to distribute vaccines in the country, this second wave is not surprising due to their lack of initial planning for vaccines. So far, only 4.7% of Argentina’s population of 45 million people has been vaccinated.

It is interesting to here about this country that is so close to us, yet facing such different circumstances compared to the United States. It feels as if the United States is basically done with the pandemic with so many people being vaccinated; in comparison, Argentina hasn’t made nearly as much progress as us and is still being hit very hard by this Covid-19 pandemic. Soon I believe it will become the job of the United States to help countries like this in order to bring the whole world out of this pandemic. As of right now, I believe that Argentina is making the right decision by going into such a strict lockdown; it will definitely hurt their economy, but getting through this second wave is more important at this point.

As nationalism remains the most powerful ideology, Argentina will most likely not be able to seek help from its surrounding countries due to the fact that they are facing the same issue. Brazil is currently having a second wave of Covid-19 as well, therefore making them unable to help others as they focus on their own nation; the same way that Argentina is.
