Raúl Castro announced his retirement as secretary-general last week, and now Díaz Canel takes control of the communist party. Under Raul Castro Cuba saw some great advancements, including nationwide access to internet which encourages democratic research by citizens and strays away from the country’s communist roots. The pandemic has had significant impacts on Cuba’s economy as it has with most countries, and they still haven’t been able to escape those effects. Under Diaz Canel’s rule, Cuba must switch to a hybrid economy as it has worked in the past with countries like China or Vietnam. But most importantly Diaz Canel must open up the economy and reconstruct relations with countries like the US.

With the youngest Castro out of office, Cuba has a new light shining in front of them; an opportunity to leave the corruption and communism of their past and rebuild. I believe Diaz Canel will do just this coming into office, the Cuban people are already inspired to gain more freedom, knowledge, and most importantly- a voice. Through foreign policy Diaz can rebuild Cuba’s economy that was destroyed by the pandemic, and build a better relationship with the US that will be extremely beneficial moving forward. If Diaz Canel is motivated to improve relations with the US, then we could be seeing the beginning of the end of the Cuban Dictatorship.

Using the levels of analysis, we can take a deeper look into this situation. On the individual level, we analyze Raul Castro retiring, but more importantly Diaz Canel taking his position in office; Diaz has the opportunity to end the Cuban dictatorship if he so pleases. On the state level we analyze the Cuban government and the citizens of Cuba, the death of Fidel Castro was the start of Cubans gaining knowledge of what it means to live in a democratic country- they experienced freedom that they’ve never known, and that knowledge has only improved since. And finally on an international level we analyze Diaz Canel’s opportunity to rebuild relations with the US under Biden’s administration, and get Cuba out of this severe economic deficit.
